The Light : directed by Guillaume Heulard & Benoît Aubert, with Joanne Tang, music by L'An2000
The Light is a video clip by the band L'An2000 that I co-directed with Benoît Aubert, himself a drummer in the band. It was a project born out of the cancellation of a video clip we were due to make for another band. We had done all the preparatory work with a view to shooting in the Bardenas desert in Spain. The urge to shoot was too strong, and we couldn't resist. Instead, Benoît suggested we shoot a video clip for their band on the same dates. So the project was practically improvised in a hurry. We took advantage of the 48 hours before our departure to write the script. Driving across France gave us time to find our lead actress, Joanne Tang, and to plan the shoot as much as possible. The Light est un clip du groupe L'An2000 que j'ai co-réalisé avec Benoît Aubert, lui-même batteur au sein du groupe. C'est un projet né de l'annulation d'un clip que nous devions réaliser pour un autre groupe. Nous avions fait toute la prépa dans l'optique d'aller tourner dans le désert des Bardenas, en Espagne. L'envie de tourner était trop forte, et nous n'avons pas pu résister. Benoît m'a proposé à la place de tourner sur ces mêmes dates un clip pour leur groupe. Le projet s'est donc quasiment improvisé dans l'urgence. Nous avons profité des 48h précédent notre départ pour écrire le scénario. Sur le trajet en voiture, traverser la France nous a laissé le tremps de trouver notre comédienne principale : Joanne Tang, et de planifier au maximum le tournage.
This sense of urgency in the conception of this clip certainly made us more creative. It was also an opportunity to experiment with certain visual possibilities. The idea was to embellish the film with a few scenes entirely in 3D when we got back from shooting. I designed them using Cinema 4D and the Octane rendering engine. We then created an introduction to the clip, reinforcing the dystopian atmosphere of the universe we had imagined. The result is a quasi-experimental work at the crossroads of both our narrative and visual inspirations. The clip was selected at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival and won the Best Visual Effects Award at the Creative Film Awards in Los Angeles. Ce sentiment d'urgence dans la conception de ce clip nous a certainement rendu plus créatifs. C'était aussi l'occasion d'expérimenter certaines pistes visuelles. L'idée était d'agrémenter le film de quelques scènes entièrement en 3D à notre retour de tournage. Je les ai conçues à l'aide de Cinema 4D et du moteur de rendu Octane. Nous avons par la suite créé une introduction au clip et renforcé par la même occasion l'ambiance dystopique de l'univers que nous avions imaginé. Le résultat, quasi expérimental est à la croisée de nos inspirations narratives et visuelles à tous les deux. Le clip a été sélectionné au San Luis Obispo International Film Festival et a remporté le prix des meilleurs effets visuels aux Creative Film Awards de Los Angeles.
